A Frame for Cleo is a collaborative children's book combining photography, artists' illustrations and narrative to tell the story of a community that has survived a nightmare. We meet Cleo as a precocious 9-year-old girl who is given a camera for her birthday by her aunt. Later that year, disaster strikes the town in which she lives, displacing thousands and destroying their homes and belongings. But Cleo is resilient. The curious child returns to her home and begins documenting the lives of her neighbors, teachers and family. Through the lens of her camera, Cleo captures the beauty in all things, even if it takes a little imagination. As she grows into a young woman, Cleo continues on her path, and soon the appreciation from her community becomes impossible to ignore. Family members give film and supplies as gifts; neighbors begin posing for Cleo. Her camera and her spirit become the string that ties her broken neighborhood back together. We see Cleo again as an old woman, still hard at work for her neighbors, still carrying that camera wherever she goes. But now her kindness and talent have been passed on to the next generation, in particular a young boy who lives a couple of houses down.
